El Dia de los Muertos
Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead is a Mexican tradition stemming from ancient indigenous rituals honoring loved ones past combined with Catholic practices brought to Mexico by Spanish missionaries. Día de los Muertos is not a morbid or sad holiday, but rather a celebration of the lives of loved ones and an opportunity to honor and remember them festively.
The Stevenson school, Carmel Campus Spanish and art teachers explore this unique holiday with students annually by discussing the history of Día de los Muertos, making related arts and crafts, decorating classrooms, enjoying traditional music, and eating traditional foods such as Pan de Muerto, (bread of the dead). Día de los Muertos is a tradition rich in language, art, history, culture, folklore and music.
This year, students will participate in a "mercado" (marketplace) where traditional crafts and foods will be "sold" and served by students to students, with all transactions taking place in Spanish. Eighth grade students will lead their school families on a scavenger hunt of the mercado in search of items to add to the all-school traditional decorative “altar” where students, faculty, and staff can remember their loved ones by placing foods, crafts, pictures, and memorabilia, known as “ofrendas” on the “altar”. Live music will highlight this special event.
Students will receive more information from their Spanish teachers as we prepare for the event. Parents are invited to join in the fiesta!!
